Draw two corners of a scarf through the twin rings at either end; the metal grips the silk and holds. Change the cloth with the outfit, the season, the mood — one handle, a different bag each time.

Saddle leather begins a little firm — a sign of quality, not a flaw. Within weeks it softens to your hand and deepens in colour.

  • Wipe with a dry cloth
  • Feed with balm twice a year
  • Should a ring or fitting ever give, send it home
  • We repair every handle we have made, for life
THE METHOD

A bag is a square of cloth
and something to hold it by.

Three moves. No knot. Eight seconds.

  1. Folded silk squares
    70 to 110 cm

    Any square you own

Silk, cotton, linen. A scarf from a drawer, a market square from a holiday, an heirloom too good to fold away.

  2. Drawing the silk through the twin rings
    No knot to learn

    Two corners, drawn through

Each corner passes through both rings, then folds back between them — exactly the way a ring belt closes. The pull of the bag pinches the silk between the rings: the harder it pulls, the tighter it holds.

  3. The finished bag on a plaster plinth
    Eight seconds

Lift — and it is a bag

The cloth finds its own shape and carries six kilos. Draw the corners further through for a compact bag; leave them long for a fuller one.

For four centuries, furoshiki — the Japanese art of carrying in cloth — stayed in Japan. We have reinterpreted it for the way you dress now, and made the one piece of hardware it never had.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Most handles on the market are cut from thin splits that stretch within months. This one is cut from saddle leather — the grade that has to hold a horse — so it keeps its line for decades.

Leather that keeps its line for thirty years is cut from the back of the hide, never the belly. It costs more and there is less of it. That is the whole secret.Tärnsjö Garveri, tanning since 1873
